Metal perfected. A coming of age suburban-dystopian opera intermingled with threats of alien invasion and the coming Apocalypse serving as metaphors for overwrought teen angst - fittingly, the album is musically highly eclectic, channeling everything from alt. rock and death metal to jazz and honky tonk. No other band has ever had such an expansive sound, while still remaining one recognizable entity. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2012]

If Spock believed space was the final frontier, he clearly hadn't given a good listen to Traced in Air. This album inhabits a surreal realm beyond the cosmos, in which beautiful vocoder harmonies can exist alongside wide, open guitar sweeps, gracefully gliding over breath-taking ethereal streams. And for an album about awaking the second mind through Buddhist meditation, it fits. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2012]

Tool has become famous for their acts of obfuscation, but beyond their confusing, pseudo-mystical personas lies a powerful songwriting force to behold. AEnima is a fierce, drug-fueled experience about finding yourself in a world in which there is so much pressure for you to be someone else, complimented by the band's deeply layered lyricism. The compositions both classically progressive while maintaining droning and minimalistic in nature (think King Crimson meets the Melvins), paired with Maynard's gloriously passionate vocal work.
