Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 80.4/100, a mean average of 79.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.8.

I was intrigued when getting this as in many publications this album is rated as one of their best and I had a few of their albums prior. It's good but I didn't find it much different from the others. Bit more proggy maybe. In fact I find all their albums on very level par, they're all good; very equal in standings. The sound on this one however has hints of them becoming a new type of Sabbath.

This album is 50 minutes of non stop energy and just pure heavy metal fun. Pretty much every track is an essential listen with only one track being the weaker of the 7 songs. The strongest song is definitely The Czar with the guitar work on that song being pure perfection to my ears. Unlike some heavy metal albums where the music gets a bit repetitive on here it stays completely unique on every track and also remains true to the progressiveness of the album. My favourite part of this record is that there is so much to explore and you can notice new things with each listen especially on tracks like The Last Baron. Overall, one of the best heavy metal albums I have ever heard and I am excited to explore more of their discography.

This is the best album ever. Not really, but it's fantastic. The Czar blew my mind the first time I heard it. And The Last Baron is probably their best song.

Have it on my chart as their best album, mainly cause Crack The Skye is my fave Mastodon song. But is it truly better than Blood Mountain and Leviathan I’ll never be able to tell. It’s a masterpiece surely, one of the many fine moments of their carrer. Wonderful musicians and complete weirdos (positively weird ofc).

Very good mixture of sludge and prog metal in its own way. Not as good as Blood Mountain, but more progressive and interesting.

When I was in high school I used to love this album, every single note sounded amazing to me. I still consider this as their best work, a little masterpiece in its genre.

Mastodon has just been such a great band since the beginning, and slowly but surely turning into a legendary metal act, and this is their best album.

Very progressive and heavy, but can provide a good hook, something not many bands can do with such conviction.

It's albums like this & Leviathan and songs like The Czar that make them the greatest in metal of their generation.
