Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 81.5/100, a mean average of 80.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.9.

A very relaxing and mellow listen and well worth spinning this record when you are in the mood to just chill. The first half of this album really carries this record though with some of the groups best ever tracks. The second half is a bit more drawn out and bland in comparison but also has its moments when it is good. Also, it is a very bloated release and could do with a considerable amount of trimming down to make it more digestible and to make it a more consistent album. Overall, the length of the album and the long stretches of quite boring instrumentation hold this record down from reaching its true potential.

Lags quite a bit in the second half but that first half is great!

This album gets some credit for delivering a variety of styles, but that takes a long time to accomplish and ultimately doesn't amount to much.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect being I never heard their music before. More background stuff, similar to Radiohead. Rating (72.81)

What?
'I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One' is YLT's 8th studio album and pretty much comes dead middle into their long discography and is widely regarded as their crowning glory. This album is quite the beast clocking in at 68 minutes/ 16 tracks and certainly takes quite a few listens to wrap your head around everything going on. The album is extremely eclectic with slices of Lo-Fi ("Return to Hot Chicken" , "Damage" , "Shadows" , "The Lie and How We Told It") , Indi Rock ("Sugarcube" , "Deeper Into Movies" , "Moby Octopad") , 2 Cover Versions ("Little Honda" , "My Little Corner of the World") , weird ass instrumentals ( the 10 minute "Spec Bebop" , "Green Arrow" which is pretty much 6 minutes of night time Crickets ) , Bossanova ("Centre of Gravity") and Country and Western ("One PM Again")

Do I Need To Hear This Album?
If you have any interest in discovering what YLT are all about absolutely , but as an album on it's own it's a little too long and eventually wears out it's welcome once you've heard it a few times. Note: the super cute "My Little Corner of the World" is just wonderful , coming right at the end and is worth hanging around for

"What's a Yellow Tango ?" (infamous quote)

A good album from a truly unique band.
It's really very yo-la-tengoy the way they rock with both power and serenity. Such strange and enchanting combination.
Also it doesn't sound dated! And that's surprising coming from the 90s.

A little long, but I love Yo La Tengo, so that's not the worst thing. Would love a little more variation, but otherwise, I love how experimental and warm this record is. Maybe my third or fourth favorite of theirs.

'Damage' and 'Green Arrow' are chill givers. Love 'Autumn Sweater' and 'The Lie and How We Told It' as well.
