Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.8/100, a mean average of 70.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.9.

Why does this album get shat on so much? I always thought this was their magnum opus before looking online to see really what people thought. It's such a solid record, it has a really cool alternative space rock sound to it, very dramatic. It's fantastic. (Edited)

Thia album is great. So hard to choose between X&Y and AROBTTH. Both are so good. So this album has a lot of synths in it which is why I think its great. The songwriting is great too. Good melodies throughout and its very melodic. Can't understand why some people are saying its overrated because its in the top 500. I would put this as their best Coldplay album probably. The sounds on this project are really universally acclaimed. I mean so is the 2002 album but I just think this one will age better with time. (Edited)

Incredibly underrated. I wouldn't be surprised if people thought this was their best album. Quality song after quality song. (Edited)

A good album. Not quite up there with, a rush of blood to the head, but still full of memorable stadium rock. Speed of sound, was a great first single from the LP and, fix you, is arguably Coldplay's greatest song. Elsewhere there's good tracks in, square one, what if?, and, talk. The quality dips slightly towards the end but you still can't deny the power of this album. Not their best then, but a good example of a band brimming with confidence. (Edited)

The first half of the album is more of a singles side, and does a poor job setting up expectations for side two. It took a very, VERY long time for me to warm up to the second half—but I'm glad I did!

Square One remans an absolute classic and one of the best songs they've ever written. Low is another favourite of mine, and one of the few songs from this record that still gets better with each listen. Wonderful stuff.

Parachutes is still far and away their best work, but I return to X&Y frequently and consider it one of the "great" Coldplay records. Don't skip it! (Edited)
