Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 45.8/100, a mean average of 45.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 45.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 24.9.

“And here is 2003 already: An album I own: The drums sound terrible, the production is horrible, the albums lacks the good guitar solos Metallica is good at and the songs are overly long and repetitive. But if you saw the rockumentary Some Kind Of Monster you know where they came from. Or you think…”

Not the worst album ever... but I have no interest in listening to it again.

The chief failing of this album is not the songs, but how they were recorded. The snare sound has been widely (and fairly) criticized, but the whole mix is very strange. And I think Kirk Hammett was right that, without guitar solos, it just isn't Metallica. (Edited)

This album is offensive in its badness
It has some redeeming factors:
1.title song it's actually very good (the snare is still terrible as in the rest of the album, and the lyrics could be better)
2. "All within my hands" could have been a good song if it was more developed. I actually like some of the melodies/ ideas of the song. (sadly, as the song it's the last, it's reaaly difficult to get there without skipping)
That's all the positive things i have to say for this wreck. Other tracks are unbearable thanks to the shit production and shit drums.
Songs are longer than should be (falling quickly into nonsense repetition and some atrocious moments like the "Kil Kil Kill" at the end)
Purify is just overwhelmingly bad... (Edited)

great bands can make crappy albums but St. Anger is way past that road. When listening to it the very first (and as of today last) time, it has never been clear in my mind what were the guys thinking, what is the sonic concept and what exactly they were trying to deconstruct in order to get... well... whatever this is supposed to be. Funny thing is that the album didn't actually received unanimously bad reviews from most major press back then. It sure as hell makes you reevaluate both Load and Reload which are definetely not this awful...
