"The CD-era length of "Say You Will" (approximately 70 minutes) causes the album to overstay its welcome; however, there are numerous gems throughout by Buckingham and Nicks; (McVie is missed.) Christine McVie - Fleetwood Mac's stalwart melody-maker, heaven-sent (see her: "Hold Me;" "Everywhere;" ...""The CD-era length of "Say You Will" (approximately 70 minutes) causes the album to overstay its welcome; however, there are numerous gems throughout by Buckingham and Nicks; (McVie is missed.) Christine McVie - Fleetwood Mac's stalwart melody-maker, heaven-sent (see her: "Hold Me;" "Everywhere;" "You Make Loving Fun," etc) - sat out the recording of "Say You Will." Although McVie's voice can be heard on "Steal Your Heart Away" (recorded near the time of "The Dance" - the album's melodic, McVie-esque highpoint - and "Bleed to Love Her," McVie's songwriting is missed as a counterpoint to the signature styles of Buckingham and Nicks. Indeed, Nicks and Buckingham have grown so distinct as songwriters - Buckingham's songs often sound like one-man guitar symphonies, and Nicks' sound very much like her solo work - that the 18 songs on "Say You Will" frequently play like two solo albums on shuffle. Make no mistake: there are major songs here, worthy of inclusion on the greatest of Fleetwood Mac albums: "Red Rover;" "Destiny Rules;" "Say Goodbye;" "Goodbye Baby;" the aforementioned "Steal Your Heart Away;" "Silver Girl;" "Thrown Down;" "Say You Will;" "Peacekeeper;" and "Miranda." If songs like "Come;" "Smile At You;" "Murrow Turning Over in His Grave;" "Bleed to Love Her," which was released on "The Dance" (1997;) and the truly unfortunate "Everybody Finds Out" were left as long lost b-sides, "Say You Will" - which features 10 or 11 very good-to-great songs - might not only feature the Mac's best songwriting since "Tusk," but might've been its most consistent album since "Rumours." There's a GREAT album lurking in "Say You Will" - unfortunately, finding it means weeding through some uninspired dreck; however, luckily, in our era, we can delete and re-arrange as our tastes dictate."  [+]  Reply
