Before they pumped out Britpop hits in the mid-90s, Del Amitri believed in the power of post-punk. In a weird mix of dark quirkiness from bands like Echo and the Bunnymen and a melodic rhythm in vain of James, the band's debut album is a surprisingly solid affair. It's a brief album, but the almost country-influenced music has a lot to say.
With waves of quirky and playful instrumentation, Del Amitri breaks the tradition of mostly dark and depressing music within the post-punk genre. The vocals and lyrics still stay true to the roots of the genre, but the sound is, for the most part, unusually happy. The most memorable songs on the record are those that dare break the boundaries of the genre. A few tracks sound closer to typical post-punk and they don't really stand out.
