Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. Cheesier than this it doesn't get. A perfect mix of Kylie Minogue the poppiest of Goldfrapp.
Too much of this electropop debut is tepid. The singles "New In Town" and "Remedy" are pretty good, but elsewhere we have tracks like "Stuck on Repeat" which has been truncated and watered-down (the original 7 minute single is marvellous, check it out on YouTube or something) or the entire second half which verges on being generic.
"Hands", the debut album from British singer-songwriter Victoria Hesketh ("Little Boots"), houses three very impressive and catchy pop songs (the singles "New in town", "Remedy" & "Earthquake"). The rest of the album is decent electropop but could have been so much more. If anything, the production plays it far too safe.
Tracks like "Ghost" and "Hearts Collide" could have sounded more innovative by rejecting the typical pop song structure or with edgier production, but instead come across disaffecting despite Hesketh's admirable lyricism. Speaking of which, Hesketh fills most of the tracks with polarising metaphors. Songs like "Mathematics" manage to sound camp & charming, but elsewhere, tracks like "Tune Into my Heart" and "Symmetry" come across as hoary. As it stands, it's a good debut but it's also an album that had potential which was unfortunately unfulfilled.
Remedy makes the whole album worth a listen. Dance for me!
