If she really just went for an acoustic sound, I could at least respect it. But this is in a sort of limbo in between. We’ve seen this bullshit pretty much ruin EDM (more than it already was ruined).
The songs clearly get better when they get more synthpoppy. But it’s nice that she tried.
Here we are, thirty years into Kylie's career and the best that she and her producers could come up with was a watered-down Avicii sound blending country pop with EDM (not that that sound was any good to begin with). I do like the fact that this record is cohesive and structured nicely, and that she wrote/co-wrote every track, but a lot of it feels like filler. "Raining Glitter" works really well, but that's in spite of the sound on "Golden" and it's only because it sounds like a hit from "Fever" with its disco influences. More tracks like "Raining Glitter" on here and I would have been warmer towards this, but this record as a whole doesn't really do much for me.
A middling album filled with a few too many tracks. Most of these are decent dance/country-pop hybrids, but none of them are exceptional (only third single "Raining Glitter" comes close). She's done far better than this, but despite the questionable choice of veering into country territory whilst hailing from Australia, it still remains listenable and quite catchy at times.
