The Revivalists self-released debut is overlooked when talking about the indie rock band's discography. It doesn't quite match up with their later work, but it's a largely enjoyable mix of blue-eyed soul, indie rock and southern rock. The biggest problem is the lack of recognizable singles. Most songs are perfectly fine, just a tad forgettable. That being said, Catching Fireflies is a pretty fine combination of steel-stringed guitars, brass instruments and raspy vocals and the closest thing to a hit single The revivalists had before Wish I Knew You. There is also an surprising edge to some songs on the album, such as the pretty tough-sounding Soul's Too Loud and the funky Don't Get Caught Up.
Overall, this is a fine, if somewhat forgettable debut album. The band shows great confidence in their instrumentation and leanings to traditional rock, but they don't do much to make that sound their own.
By the second half, things turn stale. The Appreciate Me suite feels like unnecessary filler that slows down the second half of the album.
