Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.4/100, a mean average of 69.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 70.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.3.

Almost as good as Tragic Kingdom. The high points are not as high as that album, but the lows aren't as low. Also like that album, a few tracks could have been cut and improved the average. Still pretty good. Too bad they couldn't be more consistent.

No Doubt's sophomore effort is too long. A band in need of an editor and someone to tell them they aren't variable and talented enough to drop a 13 or 14 song album on listeners.

Add that to Stefani's without an angry break-up to write about the whole offering is less stellar than Tragic Kingdom.

Gwen reverts to typical female concerns in their 20's and early 30's--children, family and marriage. A female lead in Tragic Kingdom gave a different flavor for rock fans.

Return to Saturn somewhat alienates the male listeners this time around because of the lyrics source material and topics.

New, Ex-Girlfriend, and Simple Kind of Life were the proper singles and chosen and the best songs on the album.

With the pink hair and space theme No Doubt attempts to be alternative but the music is awfully mainstream. They buy in to mainstream and popular music to follow which leads to this bands demise.

But also makes a ton of sense considering Stefani's aspirations for main stream popularity

Very good alternative rock/new wave album. Best 10 songs average is 89,8/100 and the album can get very good 90/100. Best songs are "Ex-girlfriend" and "Simple kind of life" both 95/100, followed by "Bathwater" and "Suspension without suspense" both 90/100. Most other songs good 80-85/100, but there are also some average ones. However - favourite!

Simple Kind of Life is where it's at. Wish I could write a song like Bathwater one day. Very Sparks type song that one. Fun stuff.

After a 5 year wait, the follow up to 1995's smash hit Tragic Kingdom finally came in the year 2000. It wasn't much of a letdown, as it brought the same kind of pop-ska from an equally hot Gwen Stefani. In some ways it's better than the previous album, as it doesn't drop off as much after the best tracks - but the best songs aren't quite up to the same level as "Just a Girl" "Spiderwebs" and "Don't Speak" either. However, "Ex-Girlfriend" & "Simple Kind of Life" & "Bathwater" do come close.

No Doubt is not as good when they're too serious or dour. They need to be upbeat or aggressive. Stay away from the ballads.
