Now this is more like it

After the sad and mediocre output of late career Pixies this cracking album reminds fans why we adore this band and how truly great they were

Following the release of Trompe le Monde in 1991 the cracks were already widening between band members and in particular Black and Deal and by 1993 the band had split a mere 7 years and 5 studio albums since inception. Frank Black persuaded a moderately successful solo career, Deal became a mega seller with The Breeders, Joey dabbled in session work and David embarked upon a career as a magician and metal prosecutor

Fast forward 10 years and the Pixies are reformed in 2003 (but the Black Deal relationship would forever be a tenuous one ) and by 2004 a full world tour is announced which brings us full circle to this particular release

‘Pixies Live at London’s Brixton Academy June 2nd’ is the first release of 4 nights at this particular venue capturing the band at the peak of their powers fresh, hungry and angry with only material from their iconic first 5 albums

We pretty much get the entire ‘Doolittle’ album with 11 tracks, ‘Surfer Rosa’ gets 7 tracks , ‘Come On Pilgrim’ gets 4 tracks, ‘Bossanova’ 1 track ( “Velouria”) , ‘Tromp le Mond’ 1 track ( “Subbacultcha”) and oddly 3 B-Sides in the Neil Young cover of “Winterlong”, “Wave of Mutilation UK Surf Version “ and “ Into The White “

A veritable best of the best this album doesn’t miss with any of the greatest Pixies tracks with maybe the exception of “Isla de Encanta” which really is a strange omission considering “ Wave of Mutilation” gets 2 performances

As a life long Pixies fan I have been lucky enough to hear and see many many pixies live performances and I can honestly say this is one of the very best available, from sound quality to track selections to band energy this ones on point from beginning to end

A superb time capsule of how we should remember this iconic band
