Clock Without Hands is Nanci Griffith's fourteenth studio album and her last for Elektra.
Fans looking for a follow-up to the supurb Flyer album first got the rockabilly roots of Blue Moons for the Roses, then a nice Other Voices sequel, then a set of re-recordings with the London Symphony Orchestra. Finally, in 2001 Griffith released another pop-oriented album of material called Clock Without Hands, after the novel by Carson McCullers.
After surviving two bouts of cancer, Griffith had been through a lot, and her voice was sadly affected. She gets by fairly well, but Shaking Out the Snow is sadly one of Griffith's worst vocal performances.
There are a lot of great tracks here. On Traveling Through This Part of You, Griffith cites her travels to Vietnam to trace the tracks of a loved one who had been in the war. Where Would I Be and Truly Something Fine are tender ballads and Pearls Eye View and Armstrong review important figures in history.
Where the vocals and songwriting fall short, the production is really supportive of Griffith. This was her last album on a major label and a decent entry in her mid-career phase.
Track Pick: Traveling Through This Part of You
Gems: Where Would I Be, Armstrong, Truly Something Fine, Midnight in Missoula
