Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.0/100, a mean average of 67.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 68.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.9.

Tull is always solid
I just don’t get the bad ratings. It’s not in my top tier of Tull albums but I really like this album. Salamander is one of my top 10 favorite tracks by the band. Maybe it’s because this was the 2nd Tull album I heard after Thick As a Brick as I have a sibling who’s seven years older than me and was hip to the college music scene in the 70s. My only criticism of this album is the title track - don’t hate it but it goes on and on and is just numbing after a while, FYI - I have the same problem with other verse, chorus, verse, chorus, etc songs as I don’t like Hey Jude by the Beatles for the same reason; I.e. shorten it and a great song. But I don’t see the other tracks as filler, I also don’t understand the conceptual misunderstanding, this might be the single most obvious storytelling by the band versus TAAB, passion play, Warchild, etc. I’m excluding the Christmas Album as this should be the most obvious. So where do I rank it — number 9 best tull album.
Nowhere near as bad as made out to be, no it’s not Thick as a Brick or Aqualung but I think it should be way higher in the rankings, it is so much better than anything after Heavy Horses imo, there’s some superb melodies on here.
Somehow it's just not a good Tull album. The second side really drags. Some interesting riffs on Quiz kid and Big Dipper at the start and and Salamander is a reasonable ballad.
[EDIT: 5 years later]
It may not be one of the best Tull albums but its actually very catchy. A lot of variety here. Somehow after all these years it has grown on me. Its probably now my ninth ranked Tull album. That might not sound high, but Tull have a lot of great albums.
Weak for a Tull album. Well... as far as Tull albums were to that point of time.
Half the songs are kinda good and half are just acceptable. The best moment -IMO- is the acoustic climax at mid lenght (From a dead beat + Bad-eyed).
I love Jethro Tull but this record just didn't cut it. It does have it's moments though. The concept was stupid and lyrically it was all over the place. They jumped the shark with this one and every album after this just got worse and worse.
Never got into this one if I'm honest. Sounds like they're trying too hard, but it does have its moments and has a whiff of a certain type of nostalgia to it that I'm far too young to relate to.

Some fine moments on this album, some well crafted songs with plenty of ornate parts and interesting lyrics to keep your interest. The only problem, besides the anthemic title track, are a few too many strings.

A good Tull album. Has a few weak moments but not enough to make it a weak album.
