The Dust Bowl Symphony is Nanci Griffith's thirteenth studio album and her fifth for the Elektra label. It had the potential to be something exquisite but ends up being a mixed affair. Griffith is accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra in an attempt to take her most endearing compositions and turn them into classic torch songs.
Look for Darius Rucker on "Love at the Five and Dime." And Texas singer-songwriter legend Susanna Clark painted the album cover.
It's nice to see Griffith shine on her originals, especially since she has had more commercial success covering songs by other songwriters. Unfortunately, a cover and an overture are tucked into the end of the album.
I like the concept, but at the end of the day, Griffith's songs are better with acoustic production (Philo) or contemporary pop production (MCA and Elektra). Still, you would be hard pressed to find a Griffith album with so many good originals in one place.
