Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.9/100, a mean average of 71.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 19.3.

have to say, if anything Dream Theater is incredibly talented. More specifically, John Petrucci is incredibly talented. It amazes me how well he plays the guitar and how well he arranges most of Dream Theater’s music. The music here is very good. Great string arrangements over some really cool guitar, drums, piano, everything. I don’t see Dream Theater as strictly a metal band. The just make music of all kinds, it just so happens that a lot of it tends to be metal. But they also write very nice ballads, I even recall a song they wrote a while back that had a pretty cool saxophone solo in it. Dream Theater is a great band and this is a great album, definitely worth getting.
One of my favourite DT albums. 'This is the Life' is full of spine tingling goodness.
If you're a Dream Theater fan, I implore you to give this several listens before passing judgment. The absence of Portnoy might have done more good than harm.
I think this is DT's best album since 1999; I wouldn't call it a return to form, since DT never really slumped all that much, but it's certainly a slight improvement over recent releases. The absence of Portnoy might've hurt the band's energy, but it certainly removed some of the cheesiness. The album is remarkably consistent - no duds in sight. I particularly enjoy Bridges in the Sky, Breaking all Illusions, and Beneath the Surface...and the lead-off single is DT's strongest in years.
