Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.1/100, a mean average of 72.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.8.

Musically, S.V.E is almost unrecognisable in 2022. Gone are the heartfelt folk stylings circa ‘Tramp’ (2012) and 2014’s masterpiece ‘Are We There’ and instead replaced with big bold songs all sharply polished and produced to within an inch of their lives. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it did take me several spins to warm to the new sound
Lyrically, this is probably her most powerful statement yet, with the love for her son seemingly the overarching central theme
Sharon Van Etten’s latest offering was produced by her at her home studio in LA. It’s her most lyrically impressionistic yet insular piece of work to date, detailing the near destruction of her property by forest fires, post pandemic relationship breakdown and hope for the future.
