Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.5/100, a mean average of 76.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.0.

Haven't listened to this since high school, but never rated or commented on it until revisiting it this evening.

It's long, all right. But basically every track is exceptional, if prone to long-windedness. They get the balance down by the next two albums.

I went into this album thinking I would love it based on my endless enthusiasm for their following three albums. Nothing bad, but this feels like The Lonesome Crowded West's disappointing older brother. Maybe if I listen to this album a bunch I'll get into it more.

Although I really like Modest Mouse, I do not really get this album. It starts however really great, but after that, I believe apart from a few songs there is nothing really standing out. Also, I think this album has way too many songs that are too long. That makes me losing interest in the album.

Dramamine and Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset are two incredible songs, two of the best in the great Modest Mouse catalog. The rest are pretty bad. I'd hoped it would grow on me—their next three albums are three of my favorites—but after two years, I still don't enjoy most of it. There are bits of brilliance sprinkled throughout, like the first 90 seconds of Beach Side Property, but overall I guess it's just not for me.

Nice debut album of Modest Mouse, they really brought some weird, twangy, sounds in this album. Although it think that sounds was taken to another level with Lonesome Crowded West, this is still a good debut album from one of the most beloved indie rock bands of all time.

Pretty good indie tunes, I like the "sound" it has from the poor recording equipment, whenever I listen to this it makes me want to drive out west and just chill to this album

Despising this Album at first, it quickly grew on me. Now its one of my absolute favorites, from the trippy feel of Dramamine to Space Travel is Boring. It established Modest Mouse as a unique alternative band.
