When I first started listening to Lenny Kravitz, I was far more interested in his Hendrix-inspired tracks such as Are You Gonna Go My Way and Fly Away. Listening with fresh ears to this compilation, I found myself enjoying just about every track on the album. Not being blown away by some of them but finding something in them, nonetheless. I may never buy another Lenny Kravitz album but this one will be on the stereo plenty, I'm sure.
Kravitz is indisputably an excellent musician, and occasionally also an excellent songwriter. This collection covers a period of just over ten years of his career, and one thing that strikes you is the rather large variation in the genre. It ranges from blues and heavy over to pure pop. Common to all is the thoroughly professional production - but where's the excitement and originality in all this smooth perfection?
There are of course some excellent songs, which in no way come particularly original, and therefore never really hit you..
I think he is the best in the melodic ballads like "Can not Get You Off My Mind, " "Stand By My Woman, " "Believe, " "Again" and "Let Love Rule".
It is not an album that makes me curious to get better acquainted with his original albums.
