Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Same crappy guitar riffs, same crappy sound alike songs. Over produced schlock.
This is definitely an underrated classic. It follows a similar vein to These Days (IMO Bon Jovi's best and most mature album). Only criticism is it is probably 2 songs too long. Which ones to take off though, a hard decision. Favourite tracks Queen Of New Orleans, Janie (Don't Take Your Love To Town), Midnight In Chelsea, Ugly and the Cold Hard Heart.
