Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.2/100, a mean average of 69.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.9.

The first album with Tommy Shaw. I remember hearing this a lot on the Montgomery radio stations when this came out. "Mademoiselle" and the title track are the best songs...and both are written by Shaw. "Jennifer" has a strange appeal to me as well. This wasn't their best record but you could tell they were heading someplace good with this...it feels like the real birth of the band.

"Crystal Ball" and "Ballerina" both are actually GOOD Styx songs...rest of the album doesn't fare so well.

The inclusion of Tommy Shaw just raises the bar for Styx a little more. And his influence is fully felt on this record - co-writing 5 of the 7 tracks and singing on 3. The album title track is an absolute masterpiece. Only criticism (and this applies to Equinox) is that it is 1 track too short.
