Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.1/100, a mean average of 64.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 66.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.6.

Something Magic isn't the most popular album in the Procol Harum lineup, but, as with most of their stuff, I really like it.

The Album starts with the title track, and also the best track, 'Something Magic', an understated song that is also one of their greatest later tracks. This is followed by an entertaining track, 'Skating on Thin Ice', not a bad song, but not as good as some of the other tracks on here, then 'Wizard Man' which is great after that we have 'The Mark of the Claw', a fun murder mystery. The next song is the worst, the boring ‘Strangers out in Space’.

Then we have an 18min parable, recited by Brooker over some very nice music, 'The Worm and the Tree'. This is a song that most people don't seem to like very much, but I really enjoy it. The lyrics are silly but fun, the music is varied and Brooker speaks in a clearly self-aware voice that shows that you shouldn't really take this track too seriously. Part 1 is good, parts 2 & 3 are better.

Overall, the album is enjoyable, even if it isn't one of their best. I do especially recommend getting the newer edition that contains 3 bonus tracks 'Backgammon', an instrumental that isn't pleasant or unpleasant, very much just there, 'You'd Better Wait (Live)' a brilliant song that should really have been an album track, and 'This Old Dog (Live)' which is very bouncy and fun, both the live tracks really make this album feel much more worthwhile, so get this edition if you can.
