Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.2/100, a mean average of 71.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.3.

This is without doubt, the best album Neil Diamond has ever released. It's a wonderful set of excellent acoustic songs, far and above the most consistent record he has ever made. A lot of credit must go to producer Rick Rubin, who challenged Diamond to wrote a set of songs without the negative aspects of the artist's work, I.e; middle of the road crap. There's no weak tracks here, from the lovely opener, hey Mary, the contemplative, hell yeah, and the cool jazz/rock of, I'm on to you. Other great tracks are, captain of a shipwreck, the rollicking, delirious love, and the enjoyable, we. It's all good stuff, and if there's anybody out there who has always avoided Neil Diamond, and you're a fan of singer/songwriter music, then I urge you to get this album, you will not be disappointed.
