Valley of Kings was formed in 1982 in New Haven, Connecticut. The main band consists of
Gabriel Cohen — guitar, lead vocals, keyboards;
Ron Sutfin — bass, percussion, backing vocals;
Kerry Miller — drums, percussion, backing vocals.
Most of the album was recorded and mixed in February and March 1985 at Presence Studios (East Haven, Connecticut). However, tracks A5 (Flesh And Blood), A6 ("V" Is For Victory), B1 (Where Have You Gone?), and B4 (The Plunge) were recorded earlier, in June 1984. The album was mastered at Sterling Sound (New York). The producers were Valley of Kings themselves, and the recording engineer was John Russell.
After its release, the album quickly gained popularity, rising to number 8 on the national college radio charts (CMJ, Rockpool, and Boston Rock). CMJ even called the release a "Jackpot pick", largely due to the active support of representatives of the Thirsty Ear Records label (Nick Cucci, Scott Gordon, Ira Robbins).
After that, the band embarked on two national tours (in the South and the Midwest) and performed in famous clubs.: The 40 Watt Club (Athens, Georgia), The Underground Railroad (Morgantown, West Virginia), The Electric Banana (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).
The style of the album is described as post-punk with elements of jangle pop: ringing guitars and dreamy, airy vocals can be heard in the music.
