A strange thing happened on the way to success for singer/songwriter Laura Nyro. Her initial debut album was released on Verve Forecast (Cat#: FTS 3020) with limited awareness. Then in 1973 Columbia Records repackaged the debut, re-titled it, re-sequenced it, changed the name of one song to "Flim Flam Man" and the result is this album now titled "The First Songs" (Cat#: CK 31410). It features one of Nyro's biggest hits in "Wedding Bell Blues" and 11 other tracks of similar quality. A must have. Authenticated on discogs.com

Another great forgotten artist. Ms. Nyro was not only a wonderful song writer but a truly gifted vocalist.

Glad that you enjoyed her, so influential..She reminds me a little of Rickie lee Jones (1979-present) who I am sure that you are familiar with although she is also not on this website. I guess RLJ is more like a cross between Tom Waits(who she dated) and Laura Nyro, If you haven't heard her before, sometime you might check out "We Belong together", "Runaround", "Living it up", and "Juke Box Fury", more intricate arrangements but I can hear LN's influence in her music.

It is great isn't it, thanks to ff, I have found a new great female vocalist!

I was looking through the most commented albums and I saw this one. 8 comments and only a score of 12!? Interesting. Well I listened to it and I have to say this is an incredible find! Thanks ffudnebbuh! She has a lovely voice! My favourites on the album are Stoney End and California Shoeshine Boys.

I would recommend the album "First songs"..but the two that you downloaded are also good, she is an acquired taste but when I saw that this album was ranked #5790, I had to say something..have said all of that, it is so difficult recommending artists on this site because the only thing we have to go on is everyone's charts. What would be fun is if everyone could all meet at a pub somewhere and talk about the music we love face to face...

I can't think of anyone else's voice that I would compare her to, similar to Mitchell but not as good, they frequently had to double her voice with her own to make sure that she was on pitch..so I know this sounds ominous but I have always loved her songs, as I mentioned her fame came from the wide range of artists who recorded her songs..Her song "Stoney End" resurrected Streisand's career. Hope you can find something in it that you can enjoy.
