Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.4/100, a mean average of 69.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.1.

It’s absolute bullshit that Transistor is ranked this low. Like seriously, I didn’t even know 18,000 albums existed. I understand why some people may not see this as the bands best work, but I certainly think so. It’s basically the rap rock version of The Dark Side of the Moon, it’s absolutely funky, psychedelic, heavy, and creative throughout. For my entire life it’s remained one of my most favorite albums ever, and this album (along with the rest of 311’s discography) deserves a WAY higher ranking. 18,000th place my ass.

Lots of filler... but Beautiful Disaster is easily top 5 311 songs ever. That melody cut by the piccolo snare, and heavy guitar and bouncy bass... just genius sound. The lyrics go from awesome to juvenile pending on my mood.

As musicians, these guys are tight and have kind of a unique sound, but as songwriters, well they have some great hits and then some really terrible songs. But even the terrible songs have great music... if that makes any sense.

Beautiful Disaster is a fine song. This comes off like Rage-very-lite perhaps but then you wonder where Linkin Park got their sound?
