Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.4/100, a mean average of 70.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.8.

It's a good start and hints and were they can go - No Cars Go reworked later on Neon Bible in 2007. I like this version here too. Headlights Look Like Diamonds is also strong but for me I absolutely adore The Woodland National Anthem - every listen feels like I'm at a geeky camp fire but loving the experience!

Nowhere near what came after but Headlights is still one of their best

Much like Fleet Foxes' Sun Giant EP, this is a great introduction into an even better band.

I think if this was the only thing they ever did, I'd probably not give it the time of day (just being honest), but it's fun to see their early days, with a noticeable difference with the smaller budget for recording/etc.

Some of it was intriguing and some of it was a bit boring/wouldn't choose to listen to again, but not bad.

I got a Neil Young feel from it sometimes. My Heart is an Apple was my least favorite and Headlights like diamonds and the submarine song were my favorite.

One of the best EPs I've ever listened to. I'm glad that BEA allowed me to include it on my charts.

Honestly one of my all-time favorite albums. I wish this EP were more recognised as a legitimate part of Arcade Fire's discography. This album provides a wonderful charm and atmosphere that I've never found anywhere else.

I suppose this one hasn't aged particularly well (thanks to the success of later work), but I remember hearing this when it was first released (pre-Funeral), and it was exciting and fresh to hear at the time. I imagine that if I'd been familiar with the band's LPs prior to hearing this, I might be quick to dismiss it, but I don't think the band gets enough credit for this effort.

Context is everything.

As an Arcade Fire fan, you can't ignore this one. Some of the sounds on here were clearly used in their debut, Funeral. My friend even pointed out to me that there is a whole violin part on this EP that was reused on Funeral. Some truly invaluable tracks. It does not feel as cohesive or rounded out as their later albums, but it is certainly very raw. Sounds like teenagers emoting through sound; a fascinating listen any day of the week!
