looking at that list, i wonder if the more interesting list is the artists i excluded (controversially), notably:

    arcade fire
    the beach boys
    the beatles
    bob dylan
    brian eno
    coldplay
    david bowie
    the doors
    the flaming lips
    frank zappa
    genesis
    john coleman
    kanye west
    led zeppelin
    muse
    neil young
    pearl jam
    pink floyd
    r.e.m.
    the rolling stones
    slowdive
    tool
    the velvet underground
    the who

and more controversial still, the artists i couldn't even remember to put on the exclusion list.

re-posted an old old OLD amishrage tune called DUST IS DUST IS DUST. proof. obvious Modest Mouse / Cloud Cult influences.

these are tales from growing up in a church surrounded by hypocrites. you feel like no one is genuine. no one practices what they preach. no one's life is consistent with the message in the book they throw at you day-in and day-out.

my perspective has changed since i wrote this song. one day, i caught my reflection, and i saw the worst hypocrite of all. that's when i realized what grace is.

the lyrics wrote:
i was trying hard to please
but i was hardly pleased to try
i was checking off the list
but that was just an alibi
it was hardly entertaining
i was entertained
when you stood behind your pulpit
reciting what you had trained
cause i was trying hard to please
but i was hardly pleased to try
i was checking off the list
but that was just an alibi
and every word you said
i'd heard a million times before
but the words that you spoke
left me searching for the door
not Him

still i try....

because if dust is dust, then i am dust
and everybody has still got to die

i was searching for a star
when i got blinded by the sun
i guess some things you seek out
and then one day they just come marching in
my heart was like a ghost
i was dead before my time
i was just a drum machine
cause i was only keeping time
i was searching for a star
when i got blinded by the sun
i guess some things you seek out
and then one day they just come marching in
and every word you said
i'd heard a billion times before
but the words that you spoke
they left me searching for the door
not Him

still i try....

because if dust is dust, then i am dust
and everybody has still got to die

as always, opinions are like kittens. feel free to give them away.

this song has since been rewritten so many times that there's scarcely any resemblance to the original (i kept the line "still i try", but it's in a different key now, different meter, much more intricate, classical guitars, totally different verses, sick bridge, etc.). if i ever get the band back together, you'll love what the song has become. still, it's fun to look back on where it was ages ago.

peace. and word up for reading any of this drivel.

- into the cadaverous abyss.

UNRELATED

i am no FOO FIGHTER, but that album was atypically interesting. it's not the stereotypical "WE REPRESENT ROCK" that the Davey Grohl typically represents. i'm looking for another word with "typical" in it, but i've got no dice left in my pockets. sorry, haters. lovers. grungers. et al.

we all know the bloated story about OK Computer "saving rock", and no, we don't believe that, but when you're young(er), you soak that stuff up like it's the word of god. and personally, i had my own projections for the future saviors of rock. keep in mind my favorite artists at the time were Radiohead, U2, The Smiths, Sonic Youth, Pink Floyd and The Beatles.

so ten or eleven years ago, i thought these bands were the future of alternative. here's hindsight.

ARCADE FIRE

B+ - Arcade Fire by Arcade Fire
A - Funeral by Arcade Fire
B+ - Neon Bible by Arcade Fire
D - The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
C - Reflektor by Arcade Fire
D+ - Everything Now by Arcade Fire

all-in-all, a decent band. the first three offerings (including the EP in this) are beautiful. funeral and neon bible got this heavy, farmer-orchard-apple-cobbler-echo & the bunnymen vibe that arcade fire cast off with the generic as hell suburbs, and it's all been down at the bottom of the hill from there. i don't get the suburbs love. it's the fray meets hush sound. busy music with no respect for space and atmosphere. total 180 from funeral. reflektor was a bit better, but i'm not really a fan of what murphy brings to the mix. at least the songwriting is better. and then we've got everything now. oh well.

COLDPLAY

B+ - The Blue Room EP by Coldplay
A - Parachutes by Coldplay
B - A Rush Of Blood To The Head by Coldplay
D - X&Y by Coldplay
D - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends by Coldplay
F - Mylo Xyloto by Coldplay
F - Ghost Stories by Coldplay
F - A Head Full Of Dreams by Coldplay

when chris martin sings in his lower register, his voice is quite nice. unfortunately, his obsession with thom yorke lead him into the nasally, obnoxious falsetto that he really can't pull off effectively. on top of that, chris martin apparently decided HTDAAB-era U2 (Fix You) and the great Brian Eno (an overrated producer in his own right) were the great inspirations. couple the knock-off thom yorke falsetto and you've got an ugly mess. that said, i still love The Blue Room (yes, yes it's OK Computer lite) and Parachutes. like Arcade Fire, i'm not a fan of what coldplay has become, but they've written enough good music early on that i still like 'em ok.

FRANZ FERDINAND

A - Franz Ferdinand by Franz Ferdinand
C - You Could Have It So Much Better by Franz Ferdinand
D - Blood: Franz Ferdinand by Franz Ferdinand
B - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand by Franz Ferdinand
C+ - Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action by Franz Ferdinand

what the hell happened to Franz Ferdinand? that first album is mind-bogglingly good. again, the post-punk revivalist sounds, but with a zany kink to it. production-wise, the album is a bit weak, but the tracks are so good and so consistent. this is a band that was obviously going to be the legends of a generation. but then... you could have it so much better. ok - not a terrible record, but talk about a sophomore slump. but it gets worse. Tonight has a few stellar tracks, and leading up to the album's release, i thought they'd finally returned to form, but it's an inconsistent record, and it never eclipses that debut. and... i know they did that FFS thing, and i know i listened to it, but i can't even remember anything about it except for that retro album cover.

GUILLEMOTS

A - I Saw Such Things In My Sleep by gUiLLeMoTs
A - From The Cliffs by gUiLLeMoTs
A - Through The Windowpane by gUiLLeMoTs
B - Of The Night by gUiLLeMoTs
C - Red by gUiLLeMoTs
C - Walk The River by gUiLLeMoTs
B - Hello Land! by gUiLLeMoTs

more than any other band, this band was going to blow the world's collective mind. Fyfe Dangerfield at the helm, the classically-trained, free jazz player who writes symphonies as strong as his poetry and a sweet, sweet tenor that would make you reassess your orientation, if only for a moment. Aristazabal on the stand-up bass, a legit bassist too who used to play jazz and big band on cruise ships. MC Magrao on the guitar - this guy was an experimental street performer (he's play his guitar with drills and other random things), who has played everything from death metal to shoegaze. and Greig, the zaniest, bluesiest drummer. they had "branded guillemots" that wouldn't travel with them too, people who played saxophones and clarinets and french horns. the first three EPs and that mind-blowing LP were as incredible as it could be. i've listened to all of those hundreds and hundreds of times, and it's all so underrated... and i don't think the world reacted how the band anticipated. and maybe that's why album #2 was a regular britpop record (clarion and cockateels still outta this world though). maybe that's why Walk the River was so billy joel'd. maybe the world wasn't ready for another Radiohead. i don't know... but unlike the other bands here, i don't think it was lack of songwriting or talent or what have you that wasted their potential. i think it was burnout from a cruddy music industry. i wish they'd stuck to their guns though. i think another Through the Windowpane or two, and these guys would be household names across the world. i still love this band.

THE KILLERS

B+ - Hot Fuss by The Killers
B+ - Sam's Town by The Killers
D - Sawdust by The Killers
D - Day & Age by The Killers
C - Battle Born by The Killy lers
B - Wonderful Wonderful by The Killers

the Killers' fall from grace is what got me thinking about making this post in the first place. they're sort of America's Coldplay. at times, the Killers really do sound british too - at least on their debut. their follow-up, the Springsteeny Sam's Town was actually really good, and i thought it was a great direction for them at the time, but i think they got stuck in it. their next three albums were mostly pretty lifeless and uninspired. there are exceptions, but the band who wrote Jenny Was A Friend of Mine, Andy You're A Star and Indie Rock N Roll died with Sam's Town. the new album though is surprisingly good. it's not groundbreaking, but for the first time since Sam's Town, i found myself thinking, dang, i'm glad The Killers are still around.

MUSE

B - Showbiz by Muse
A - Origin Of Symmetry by Muse
B - Hullabaloo Soundtrack by Muse
A- - Absolution by Muse
C+ - Black Holes And Revelations by Muse
B - HAARP by Muse
C - The Resistance by Muse
D - The 2nd Law by Muse
D - Drones by Muse

Muse... I think Matt Bellamy fell in love with his reflection or something. In the early days, you get the sense that he's shy on confidence, seeking approval, etc. Once he found his confidence though, the gig was up. I doubt there's much truth to that, but it's how the music feels to me. like, early on, he's trying so hard to get approval, and later, he's arrogantly boasting that yeah, i'm one of the most talented musicians on the planet. bask in my glow. and it's an ugly look. and the music has gotten worth. the cleverer the music asserts itself to be, the shallower it all looks. til the band is sort of an expression of vanity now.

i'm tired. i will regret what i wrote about muse and the bellamies.

um, and also, these ratings are obviously objective facts. but anyway, yeah... none of them turned out to be the radioheads i thought they'd be. and as massively disappointed as i've been with all of them, they all have their place. so who were your idols / future saviors of yesteryear, and how have they fared the long years since?

eta: i'm going to probably abort this train and start a new thread.
