Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 12% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.4/100, a mean average of 75.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.1.

Grouper Presents: Dreamy Symphonies on D Major!
I cannot get into the mood to really enjoy this. Any advice on how to get into this? How does it make you feel, what do you pay attention to? I feel like I'm missing something to really enjoy it.
You have to love reverb, ghost-like mood to love this record. A really deep and disturbing record. Perfect to drift off in a forest in the night time.
This actually may be the best introduction to grouper, as in it's an album you can take song-by-song and dissect her more concrete themes and moods, from heartbroken (cloud in places), sensitive and melancholic (being her shadow, vital), mortality (the man who died in his boat) and an eerie paranoia (vanishing point). And although not one of her most ambitious works, it's a consistiently lovely and ultimately optimistic album, despite all the sadness.
Would you like some more reverb?
