Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.5/100, a mean average of 68.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 68.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.8.

Solid debut, worthy of a few listens to see what they were before diving into hard rock and metal.
Best song(s): Honesty is no Excuse; Eire; Return Of The Farmer's Son; Saga Of The Ageing Orphan; Dublin

This album has a great atmosphere to it, and the individual band performances are fantastic, but the songwriting is inconsistent at best. It seems to be lots of good ideas thrown in with lots of other mediocre ideas, and the result is an album of what feels like incomplete songs. However, there are some good tracks to be found, such as "Ray Gun" and "Look What the Wind Blew In". Nothing here is particularly bad, but far from great.

You get shades of the Lynott magic, just little flashes of the brilliant insouciance he managed on Jailbreak and on half of the Fighting album, but that was 4 years of trail and error away when this was made. I particurlarly like Ageing Orphan.

May not be on the magical level of Jailbreak, but damn if this isn't an amazing debut.
