Like so many bands, I see the Mega's albums form an arc from the straight forward power punk of Tranzophobia to the much poppier Magic Bullets (excluding their final album Soulscraper which disappointed me so much at the time I can't honestly remember how it sounds.) On this arc the peak for me is undoubtedly the There Goes my Happy Marriage E.P. and this their long playing masterpiece. The Husker Du influence is evident here and the songs are allowed much more room to breath giving the album a texture that the minimalism of their early recordings never even hinted at. Maybe it's just the sound of a band's craft naturally improving but I get the feeling they made a conscious decision to lift the self imposed restrictions of their early formula and pushed themselves to make the best album they could and it produced an album I'll still be listening to in my old age.
