Live, the Tragically Hip are a completely different beast. Gord Downie transforms from the understated and intelligent poet to the manic and bombastic frontman. To a few, this may seem out-of-character, but to most Hip fans, this is what makes the Tragically Hip one of the greatest bands on the planet. The Hip's live performances are energetic and unique, with spontaneous and impromptu quotes and references from Gord Downie throughout. This energy is captured beautifully by the Hip's classic live album, as exemplified in standout tracks such as "New Orleans is Sinking", "Fully Completely", and "Nautical Disaster". The band not only performs these numbers, it feels like their entire soul is being poured into them. How Mr. Downie is able to carry on at this intensity every concert is a wonder of the modern age.
