Het is algemeen aanvaard dat Jelly Roll Morton een van de eerste echte jazzgrootheden was. Hij vond het zelf echter nodig om overal waar hij kwam zichzelf alle lof toe te eigenen en ging er zelfs prat op dat hij in zijn eentje jazz had uitgevonden. Mensen hebben het nu eenmaal moeilijk met grootpraters en daarom werd hij later in zijn carrière niet meer echt door de jazzliefhebbers in de armen gesloten. Eigenlijk had hij gerust bescheiden mogen blijven. Zijn naam en faam zou nog steeds overeind gebleven zijn. De jazz die hij eind jaren ’20 van de 20ste eeuw maakte was een mengeling van ragtime, een beetje blues, maar vooral veel lokale invloeden uit zijn geboortestad New Orleans. De titel van deze verzamelaar vat eigenlijk heel goed de inhoud samen. Terwijl Miles Davis meer dan twee decennia later zijn album Birth Of The Cool noemde, moest een ander soort jazz dus eigenlijk ‘hot’ zijn. De muziek van Jelly Roll Morton maakt daar zeker aanspraak op. De 19 nummers op deze CD brengen de dancehalls van de jaren ’20 weer tot leven en je ziet zeer levendig de hippe dansen van die tijd voor je ogen, vooral dan de charleston. Het is wel een beetje jammer dat je de piano niet zo goed hoort omwille van de kwaliteitsgrenzen want Jelly Roll Morton was vooral een begenadigd jazzpianist. Toch blijft dit een collectie energieke, swingende en hete jazz.
