Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 5% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.5/100, a mean average of 75.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.6.

Mercury Rev are always a bit weird but on lots of their albums I can't really dig their weirdness, but here I can. It's not one of their best known albums but to me it's one of their best especially where they just keep jamming along like on Meth Of A Rockette's Chick and Snorry Mouth. Not everything is a highlight though.

One of the most insane albums I've ever heard! I first time I heard the opening track was when I was around 13 or so, and it blew me away, I had never heard anything like it. Some of these songs have amazing build-ups and can make 10 minutes pass like it's nothing. Best tracks imo are: Bronx Cheer,Meth of a Rockette's Kick and Something for Joey

With 'Boces' (the follow-up to their debut masterpiece, 'Yerself Is Steam') Mercury Rev's Dave Fridmann and Jonathan Donahue have proven to be arguably the most creative artists to have emerged on the scene since Mayo Thompson. Beautiful pastoral sounds of the flute merge with sonic collages, free-form jazz elements and guitar distortions underpinned by Fridmann's directed orchestration, to create a unique surreal dissonant fairytale atmosphere. Mercury Rev have produced some of the most imaginative music of all-time.
