Great compositions by Ray Davies here, "Death of a Clown" is Sad and brilliant, and "Waterloo Sunset" can battle Face to Face with Beatles's "Penny Lane" for being a song that describes English suburban life.

I agree with garycottier - every song is a peep through the window into someone else's life. Great to sing along to, especially while looking for runaway fleas.

Something else, is my favourite Kinks album. Everything that had been promised over the course of a brilliant run of singles, and almost achieved on preceding record, face to face, finally comes to fruition on a perfect LP. Something else, is the album where Ray Davies finally lands on his feet. His songs are like miniature kitchen sink comedy dramas featuring all sorts of everyday characters from envied schoolmate, David Watts, to the courting couple Terry and Julie in the fantastically beautiful, Waterloo sunset. Ray is on top form here, especially on, Harry rag, tin soldier man, and the aforementioned, David Watts, and, Waterloo sunset, but Dave also contributes one of the records best songs in, death of a clown. It's a wonderful album, of it's time, yes, but also relevant today because of it's humanity. A lot of people claim that The Kinks best LP is the next release, the village green, but for me it's this one. Excellent.

This is a great jump from what they had done before. Waterloo Sunset is fantastic.

Do you like thoughtful, witty Britpop with folky influences? If so, you'll probably want to try 'Something Else' by the Kinks.

Ray Davies really comes into his own as a songwriter on this one, particularly with Waterloo Sunset and Tin soldier. however, the best track is actually a song co-written by Dave:Death of a Clown.

Great Kinks albums. Not as developed as Village, Arthur, or Muswell, but it still shines. Waterloo Sunset is one of their alltime best tracks.

A great album by The Kinks with loads of great tracks but I don't think the songs are as consistently good as on 'Village Green' and 'Arthur'.

This must be the ultimate version of this classic Kinks album. Earlier versions have suffered from uneven or poor sound. Like the other Kinks Deluxe the releases, both the stereo and the mono version of the album sound crisp and clear - sheer pleasure.

I believe the original album songs are well-known - no filler and most of them classics.

Singles from the the period have been added as relevant bonus-tracks. "Susannah's Still Alive" and "Autumn Almanac" are both in stereo and in mono. Note that there is a fade-in on the stereo version of "Autumn Almanac" - I have never noticed this before.

Also "Mr Pleasant" is in both stereo and mono, but the stereo version is very different, and a completely different take.

"Act Nice and Gentle" is the mono B-side to "Waterloo Sunset".

The only "new" title is "Sand in My Shoes", which is really the same song as "Tin Soldier Man", but with completely different lyrics. Great song at any rate.

Alternate versions or mixes are found of several of the album-tracks. "Afternoon Tea" even in three versions. One of them is an alternate version - more laid back and longer. In other cases you need to listen and compare carefully to spot the differences.

The BBC recordings are obviously interesting too. They are not live recordings, but recordings done for the BBC - a few do sound like the original recordings, though. Among those "Good Luck Charm", performed by Dave Davies may be the most appealling. Unfortunately it's not a very interesting song.

I actually think this might be The Kinks best... If so, there's not much in it. They had a few great ones all in a row in the late 60s.
