Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.7/100, a mean average of 68.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 68.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 22.8.

For me, this is Dream Theater’s most underrated album. In my eyes, it doesn’t carry the title “Dream Theater” by accident. This record is a masterpiece and a statement: this is who we are — Dream Theater!
It’s incredibly elaborate in both composition and production — with orchestral and classical influences — yet still very song‑driven. It includes many of my all‑time favorite DT tracks. If I had to pick only ten CDs to take with me to a deserted island, this one would definitely make the list.
Thank you for this album, Dream Theater!
While its not their most inspired work, it still delivers a tasteful mix of strong metal songs worth re-listening to.
Fun Album! Dream Theater is my favorite metal band!
I listened to DT12 a lot when it came out. As time went on, I found myself skipping a number of tracks, and now I barely revisit it aside from the occasional Enigma Machine or Illumination Theory although I did really like Enemy Inside and The Bigger Picture as well.
Overall, a somewhat lackluster album for Dream Theater where the drum production (began to) failed miserably.
The string section in Illumination Theory is one of the most beautifully arranged pieces of music this year. Overall, the record is a vast improvement from their last.
