Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. While its not their most inspired work, it still delivers a tasteful mix of strong metal songs worth re-listening to.
Fun Album! Dream Theater is my favorite metal band!

I listened to DT12 a lot when it came out. As time went on, I found myself skipping a number of tracks, and now I barely revisit it aside from the occasional Enigma Machine or Illumination Theory although I did really like Enemy Inside and The Bigger Picture as well.
Overall, a somewhat lackluster album for Dream Theater where the drum production (began to) failed miserably.
The string section in Illumination Theory is one of the most beautifully arranged pieces of music this year. Overall, the record is a vast improvement from their last.
