When I first heard there was a band called Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., I assumed they were a very cleverly named alt-country outfit. Turns out they're a dance pop band with a name that's kind of a throwaway (albeit a funny, whimsical choice). If they wind up sort of forgotten in the annals of rock history, which seems now a distinct possibility, they can take pride in having made at least two really good albums: this one and It's A Corporate World. My favorite track on The Speed of Things is "If You Didn't See Me (Then You Weren't on the Dance Floor)," a song that reflects both Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.'s musical aesthetic and my own desire to establish my presence out there on the dance floor.
