Xavier Rudd's debut album highlights the qualities that make him most compelling as a live performer: his abilities as a one-man band simultaneously playing drums, stomp box, didgeridoo, slide guitar, and/or lead vocals. By himself he's able to produce a spectacularly full and rich sound, one that can get a huge roomful of people dancing themselves into a brainless trance. "Brainless," I say, because I'm not convinced the lyrics are all that profound. But the grooves, when he really gets rocking away on the drums and the slide guitar and the didgeridoo, are really something worth hearing, a sound that transcends the gooey mess that often defines "world" music. For a sense of what I mean, check out the hypnotic slide blues of "Conceal Me."
