As far as I'm aware, Mason Jennings has never made a truly bad album, though he does tend to retrace his steps along familiar terrain: quirky indie folk songs with a voice that verges slightly off key for emotional or comedic effect. My favorite track from Always Been is the lovely and affecting "Dreaming," which one writer has described as sounding like "a lost Harry Nilsson track." I can't really comment on that, since I'm not familiar with Harry Nilsson. My nearest touchstone is Mason Jennings himself on his Minnesota album, which I take to be some of his most personal work, both personally and geographically. In Jennings's case, that's always a good thing, since he draws poignantly and honestly from his own life experience.
