I'm not instinctively pulled to R&B, but I like Akon's style here - if it is R&B then it is with a bit of a hip hop twist.
There is much pleasure to be found on this pretty laid back album. I even enjoy the Kanye inspired speeded up vocals for old classics that he samples.
This album kinda surprised me in Sept 18 in so much that I wasn't expecting it to be anywhere near my top 100. I had heard Freedom before and liked him, but this album was just better. Why? I'm still a bit unsure.
R&B generally isn't my thing, but he delivers it with a bit of hip hop swagger and soul that just makes the songs much more interesting to me.
Songs like Bonanza (Belly Dancer) I should hate - it even sounds a bit like Ricky Martin could have done it - but Akon pulls it off with a swagger and tongue in cheek.
Locked Up, Gangsta, Ghetto, When The Time's Right and the sampling on Lonely with the speeded up vocals just works.
