Inventive psychedelic/early-prog album that never stays in one place too long. A little bit of everything on this record, especially on standouts like Fresh Garbage, Uncle Jack, Mechanical World, and Taurus. Clearly an influence for many--obviously already much has been made about the similarities between Taurus and Stairway to Heaven, though I also hear some of Wishbone Ash's Capture the Moment in the long finale Elijah. Solid album worth exploring.
The first start side starts out strong with "Fresh Garbage" and "Mechanical World"; the second side is more typical of psychedelic rock, though with a distinctive "Gramophone Man", and ends with each band member taking turns to solo ("Elijah").

I'd say my favourite from this unfortunately almost forgotten band: at least 4 very good albums (this, Dr.Sardonicus, Cleas, The Family...)

Azzeccata la copertina di questo disco, a simboleggiare che la musica degli Spirit era un insieme delle influenze musicali dei cinque componenti e che non c'era un vero leader, almeno in quei primi anni. Questo primo omonimo album contiene alcune delle loro cose migliori tra cui "Gramophone man", il lungo strumentale "Elijah" e quella "Taurus" da cui Jimmy Page prese "ispirazione" per creare "Stairway to heaven".
This record is overshadowed by "Dreams" but in many ways this is better album.
Good album. Scary album cover.
"mechanical world" is one of the finest science fiction rock epics of all times......OF ALL TIMES!!!!!!!!!
