This album was the one where Green (Scritti Politti) decided to make some money out of his songwriting talent and began writing commercial hits. I'll always prefer the previous album with unheralded classics like 'Asylums in Jerusalem' on it songs that had an edge and feeling to them that is simply not there on Cupid & Psyche. For me there's no doubt that Green's music was better before he sold out.
Now I'm older I try to understand why Green went commercial on this record and why I resent it. It's like refusing a promotion at work when you know you have the ability to rise higher in terms of what the world considers to be success and saying no I prefer the company of the lads and remaining piss poor.
So on that basis I will try to assess the quality of the music on this album fairly.
Green remains a talented songwriter, with or without an edge.
Too Goddamn Good.
My soundtrack for the summer of 1985. Loved this album. Standout tracks are certainly the hits, Word Girl, Wood Beez, Absolute and Perfect Way.

Everything I hate about 80s music (which is not a lot, mind you) is omnipresent here. So yeah, I didn't like it.

There was a section of three or four consecutive good songs in the middle. Otherwise, meh.
I bought Cupid & Psyche 85 by Scritti Politti on 26/08/2001 from on CD for £5.00 The version I have is on the record label Virgin catalogue number CDV 2350 It entered the UK charts on 22/06/1985 and got to number 5 spending a total of 19 weeks on the chart.
