Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 5% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.2/100, a mean average of 78.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 4.6.

I wasn't expecting to like A Dotted Line anywhere near as much as I do. I hadn't loved Nickel Creek's previous progressive bluegrass nearly as much as most people I know, and I actually find Chris Thile to be an annoyingly corny presence (his takeover of A Prairie Home Companion, while bringing in a lot of great musical acts, has made the program as a whole unlistenable for me). What I like about this album is the band's willingness to absorb a harder-edged rock sound into their repertoire, which serves their songwriting approach surprisingly well. "Destination" in particular is a well-written song with strong melodies and virtuoso instrumentation.

After a disappointing 2005 release, they went on an indefinite hiatus. Its members enjoyed varying measures of success outside the band, both as solo artists and in collaboration with other bands. Now they've reconvened for the band's 25th anniversary (the members were in grade school when they formed). This, their sixth album, lacks some of what made their 2000 breakout so great, but I'm still enjoying hearing new music from these guys.

What do you know, another masterpiece from Nickel Creek. BEA community, please take notice! And everyone else for that matter. Probably the most talented ensemble I listen to with any frequency.
