Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 61.3/100, a mean average of 61.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 61.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 21.3.

I see a bit of non-love for the album but I enjoyed it. Storyline or not, indulgent or not, I just listened to the sounds and vocal and found it good, solid Muse
Drones by name and drones on by nature. I know Muse can be hit and miss but there's no brilliant highlights just them being self indulgent

Agreed ‘Drones’ out of context isn’t great on the surface but dig a little deeper to understand the background (remember it IS a concept album) and things becomes easier to appreciate
What most fans don’t know is than ‘Drones’ actually tells two stories rather than a singular linear narrative most concept albums represent
Story One
Matt is on record in saying that the main story is about a female character called “Mary”, however please take this with a grain of salt as the album’s lyrical context is clearly masculine
Mary initially loses the love of her life and becomes lost (“Dead Inside”) whereby she meets the dark forces (“Drill Sergeant”) and becomes brainwashed and indoctrinated (“Psycho”), however she knows deep down she has lost something and needs to get out (“Mercy”), unfortunately the dark forces take control over her over and she unmercifully goes to war using drones against the people (“Reapers), “The Handler” represents a turning for the good when Mary decides she doesn’t want to be controlled any longer and freedom becomes more important (“JFK”) which leads to escape and emancipation (“Defector”) and fighting against the dark forces that used to control her (“Revolt”). Story one ends with “Aftermath “ and Mary finding love once more which is more important than war and fighting
Close Curtain End Of Act 1
The second story is a little more convoluted and harder to follow. It plots the narrative of a Dictator and a Globalist what ever that is (“The Globalist”) whereby The Globalist gives all of his power to The Dictator who then goes on to destroy the world with bombs leaving the two protagonists alone in the world with The Dictator coming to the realisation that he really only wanted to be loved. The album closes with “Drones” representing the souls of all the people he’s killed judging him with an Amen ending the album
In closing let me share my own miss- heard lyric story
The track “Psycho” contains the lyrics:
“(I’m gonna make you)”
“(I’m gonna break you)”
“(I’m gonna make you)”
“ A f-ING psycho”
“ A f-ING psycho”
“ A f-ING psycho”
When the song first came out I thought the line was:
“(I’m gonna make you)”
“(I’m gonna break you)”
“(I’m gonna make you)”
“ YOUR FATHER’S psycho”
“ YOUR FATHER’s psycho”
“ YOUR FATHER’s psycho”
Come on Matt you gotta agree its a better lyric, right ?
I think that must be the most awful cover of a mainstream album that I've ever seen. Christ knows what they were thinking.
This album is not a love at first sight.
If you try it multiple times in different moods, it can catch you and you will get it.
This would be better without Revolt and the interludes, but the rest of it is perfect and brutal.
I'm not a Muse hater nor a fanboy, and I think this album is good (7/10)
My least favorite muse album, same formula, same concept, most mixed quality.
I like conspiracy theorist stuff, but listening to this album felt like a brainwash they are singing about so much these days...
Matt Bellamy: “we want to go back to making real rock, we realized we grabbed synths too fast making music”
Me: “well, this is going to be a disaster”
Lesson for the kids: don’t give a fuck about what hipsters say what is ‘real’ music, be as plastic and fake as you want, as long as the result is good.
