According to Carlton herself, this is the first "real" album she made. While I would personally disagree with her (those first two albums of hers are both masterpieces), I can definitely see a lot of melodic development here. This is one of the few Radio Disney albums I was meh about when I first got, but ended up loving from exposure to what "real music" is. Every time I listen to this (which is about once or twice a year) it gets better.
