This is McMurtry's most upbeat and lavishly produced album. Many of the tracks, especially the anthemic Levelland will surely find appreciation from heartland rock fans. The band really grooves and the production rivals the early records of Sheryl Crow. There are even backup singers, but it's a shame they weren't featured more. Hell, they could have sang all the lyrics, since McMurtry is blessed with fine lyrics but lacking vocals. Nearly every track has a music video too.

It slows quite a bit in the second half though. McMurtry has been consistent over his career but he continued to improve, really taking off in the mid 2000s.

Recommended.

There are no bad tracks on this alt-country album, but my favorite has to be "Down Across the Delaware," a beautiful, melancholy take on the familiar things--the familiar jangle of a person's keys, the thump of a cranky radiator--that entrench themselves in our memories and remain there long after we've moved on. Overall this album is a deeply felt, and profoundly American, meditation on place and nostalgia.
