Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 82.1/100, a mean average of 80.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 82.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 19.1.

One of my favorite albums... I don't give it 100 because "Mantra" and "Faaip de Oiad" are kind of there for filler. All other tracks blend wonderfully into each other and are quite musically complex, excluding "Ticks and Leeches", which feels out of place. My favorites are "Lateralus" and "Parabol/Parabola".
Deserves all the praise. Great ambitious album. If you ask me , I would prefer if the album ended with Reflection. Still a master piece. (Edited)
It’s tough to get through…there’s a lot of uninteresting filler and it’s long (and heavy, in a non-musical sense). Tool’s sound is as good as ever, of course, and there’s something genius in the lyrics “I know the pieces fit” on top of Danny Carey’s insane polyrhythms. Yeah, they fit…but only because of having one of the greatest drummers ever…
What a fantastic album that is full of great ideas and a lot of very heavy instrumentation. They really hold nothing back and seem to let out all of their passion on this project as some of these songs are so raw and powerful. This makes for a fantastic experience as you can really emote along with them and let out a lot of anger or emotion. The longer songs is where the album truly shines with Lateralus and The Grudge being my two favourite songs. Instrumentally, there is a lot to love as well with the percussion providing some outstanding moments and it does a great job of driving the music forward. The guitars are the highlight for me as they give it that heavy sound and some of the solos on here are exceptional. Where the album struggles is the length of the release. It is far too long and could be reduced by quite a bit. There is filler on here as well with a few songs being completely unnecessary in my opinion. Overall, you have to be in the right environment and mood to enjoy this album but when you want to turn it on it is absolutely phenomenal and deserves a lot of praise.
