Nowhere near as good a songwriter as he is a guitarist (one of the top 5 of all time IMO), but his renditions of other people's songs are fantastic and provided a musical gateway of sorts for generations of music fans. The majority of his studio albums are unspectacular, but his live albums really capture what Clapton is all about. One of the best live acts of all time. (Edited)
Such a great musical talent should have produced far more brilliant solo albums than he has but there's some good stuff just not that consistant & a little too safe most of the time.
One of my favorite guitarists. I really like his compilation albums and live ablums but for some reason he never produced a great solo album. Perhaps he was more of a singles artist. After reading his autobiography, I guess it was because he was either too high or too drunk for most of his life. Probably one of the greatest examples of unfulfilled talent there is.

Decurso has it right. His reputation as a performer and player cause us to overestimate his abilities as a songwriter. Most of the time, he'd be better off sticking to covers. (Edited)

Incredibly talented and accomplished guitarist who also managed to crank out a lot of very mundane music along with the classics. (Edited)
