Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 4% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 78.9/100, a mean average of 78.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.3/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 16.2.

Mr. Slowhand is the best
Incredibly talented and accomplished guitarist who also managed to crank out a lot of very mundane music along with the classics.
Decurso has it right. His reputation as a performer and player cause us to overestimate his abilities as a songwriter. Most of the time, he'd be better off sticking to covers.
Nowhere near as good a songwriter as he is a guitarist (one of the top 5 of all time IMO), but his renditions of other people's songs are fantastic and provided a musical gateway of sorts for generations of music fans. The majority of his studio albums are unspectacular, but his live albums really capture what Clapton is all about. One of the best live acts of all time.
You have to give Eric Clapton 5 stars
One of the best guitarists ever. He did so much. Collaborations, bands, solo.
Derek and the Dominoes, Cream, the Yardbirds, all good! Eric Clapton kicks guitar playing butt in any band he's in.
Rate him as a whole, not for his solos!
Yes I always dream about a solo Clapton album.
