Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 2% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 80.7/100, a mean average of 80.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 82.7/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 18.3.

Better than any 21st Century R&B/Quiet Storm crooners. Unparalleled writing, arranging, producing legend. Comparable to Stevie Wonder of the 70s, Prince in the 80s or (?) from then on.
How is it possible that I was all about Erykah Badu, yet somehow I missed this guy? Stellar R&B that I caught up to years later.
Best soul artist since Marvin Gaye. Completely redefined and perfected the genre in a single swoop, then went on ahead and bested his best just to prove that he could do it. Has mastered the art of seduction from every angle, from the subtlest of whispers to skyscraping loveshouts, all while incorporating everything from Philadelphia, '92 hip hop, and afrobeat into his arrangements. Holy christ this guy is good.
D'Angelo has a powerful, soulful, soaring voice...but, he never goes over the top. All of the great soul singers never do (Learn from the wisdom of his ways, Mariah and Whitney)
