A great Neo-Soul album. Not as good as Voodoo but there are still some great songs in it.
Sublime and oh-so smooth, D'Angelo's "Brown Sugar" subtly works its magic and there's not a single weak track here. Really quite underrated on this site.
A lot of the musical production on this is quite good, and meticulously arranged. With very good beats and some interesting basslines, at times funky and at other times jazzy.
Where it really falls short for me is in the highly affected vocals, with "Cruisin'" and "Higher" being the worst offenders: annoying falsetto, double or multi tracked vocals which only serve to magnify their awfulness, and the backing vocals all from D'Angelo himself are just supremely annoying to me. And most of the tracks contain one or more of those bad traits. Plus the lyrics can be inane, e.g, "got a jonz in my bonz" couple dozen times.
A few tracks go on too long, repeating the same chorus ad nauseum, e.g. "Lady" at 2+ minutes of outro.
Also, D'Angelo's influences are a bit too obvious at times, e.g. Prince on "Eyes of Mine".
Overall a decent and somewhat enjoyable album with major flaws, and a few tracks that for me need to be skipped entirely. If I were reviewing just the first half, I'd be a lot more positive.

This album is criminally underrated on this website. It is oh so smooth and catchy and every song is great. I am excited to hear Voodoo but Brown Sugar is tough to beat. Might be in the minority to think Brown Sugar (along with Baduizm) is the best soul album ever. Have yet to hear Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite.
Anyways, if you like good music this one is something you can't overlook.
